Flower in the Concrete

Flower in the Concrete offers an intimate portrait of the residents of Flower Drive, a historic working-class neighborhood in South Central Los Angeles facing the pressures of gentrification. The project highlights the Flower Drive Tenants Association - a group formed in response to escalating eviction threats and harassment from real estate speculators. At the heart of the film are interviews with residents whose reflections anchor the story of their struggle. As community members reminisce on their lives in the community, their memories come alive through projections of archival photos and home videos layered across the walls of their homes. Contrasted with these memories of both joy and grief, we see scenes of unity as residents host community meetings, celebrate at block parties, and march in support of their neighbors facing displacement.
